Be careful what you tweet. It may come back to haunt you. That’s exactly what happened to Ivanka Trump. Four years ago the first daughter had quoted Albert Einstein and tweeted: “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” The problem is Einstein never said that.
The tweet resurfaced over the weekend and social media users lost no time in mocking Ivanka. Colin Dickey, a US author, seems to have prompted the onslaught after sharing the tweet, commenting: “The fact that Einstein never said any such thing only makes this tweet that much more perfect.”
Twitter users picked up on the misquote. While some poked fun at the irony, others questioned whether Ms Trump might actually be mocking the notion of changing facts herself. The incident, meanwhile, prompted other Twitter users to share their own favourite fake quotes.
