Babies kept in cardboard boxes at cash-strapped Venezuela hospital

Experts said that most of the hospitals in Venezuela are suffering from shortage of resources.

Caracas: As Venezuela struggles to cover up for their economic losses, it has emerged that its cash-strapped hospitals are forced to place new born babies in cardboard boxes instead of incubators.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the image shared by the hospital staff showed the infants being lined up in makeshift cots made by cardboard, sparking outrage.

Every baby is wrapped in a blanket and placed in the boxes with medical notes taped to the front of the box.

Experts said that most of the hospitals in Venezuela are suffering from shortage of resources. President of Venezuelan Medical Federation, Douglas Leon, said that some of the hospitals are operating with just 5% of the resources, including medicines and equipment.

Soon after the photographs were posted on social media, the president of the Venezuelan Institute of Social Security said ," Our hospitals take care of hundreds of patients, despite what some media are hiding. We recognise the failures and will continue."

Recently, India proposed to settle Venezuela’s dues towards drug imports through a barter system. Several Indian pharma companies have taken a hit due to curbs imposed by the Venezuelan government on the transfer of foreign currency.
