New York bomb squad responding to suspicious package in Times Square

Police blocked off a stretch of the tourist destination for more than an hour.

New York's bomb squad was responding to a suspicious piece of luggage abandoned on a sidewalk in the Times Square neighborhood on Wednesday, police said.

Police blocked off a stretch of the tourist destination for more than an hour as investigators worked to determine the contents and owner of the luggage left outside a McDonald's restaurant, a spokesman with the New York Police Department said.

The investigation comes days after a pressure-cooker bomb exploded in the city's Chelsea neighborhood, injuring 31 people. Additional bombs were located in a second location in the city and in New Jersey shortly after the explosion.

Police have charged 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized American citizen born in Afghanistan, with the blast.
