Obama vows to nominate new Supreme Court justice

Obama pressed the Republican-led Senate to give his nominee a 'fair hearing and a timely vote'.

Rancho Mirage: President Barack Obama vowed on Saturday to nominate a US Supreme Court justice candidate to replace the late Antonin Scalia, pressing the Republican-led Senate to give his nominee a "fair hearing and a timely vote."

"I plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor in due time," Obama said in California after a golf game with friends.

"There will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the Senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote," he added.

"These are responsibilities that I take seriously as should everyone. They're bigger than any one party. They are about our democracy," said the US President.
