US Elections: Hillary Clinton in the lead but faces turnout fiasco

Trump supporters more likely to vote on Election Day.

Washington: Despite Hillary Clinton’s lead over Republican candidate Donald Trump, a continuing dip in interest amongst some of her supporters could turn into a potential turnout fiasco for the Democrats on the day of the US presidential elections — less than nine weeks away.

The analysis emerged after a survey of voters by Washington Post and ABC News. According to the latest figures, Clinton holds a 46 per cent to 41 per cent “edge” over Trump but both candidates have had a loss of reputation with more than six in 10 voters saying they were unable to place complete faith in either of the candidates. A majority are critical of Clinton’s ethics and Trump’s qualifications and statements against minorities in America. When voters were asked about recent developments, almost 2 in 3 had doubts about Trump’s immigration policy while six in 10 suspected Clinton of favouring major donors of the Clinton Foundation.

Further analysis of the WashPost-ABC poll revealed that Trump supporters were more enthusiastic towards the elections with 46 per cent saying yes. But the enthusiasm numbers dipped for Clinton as supporters registered a weak 33 per cent.

Additionally, Trump’s supporters said they were actively monitoring the trends and a whopping 93 per cent said they were “absolutely certain to vote”. In contrast, only 45 per cent of Clinton supporters said they were actively following the campaigns and just 80 per cent said they are “likely” to vote. This is the trend that experts say, could hurt Clinton’s prospects on Election Day. But she is certainly the bigger hit with donors. It has emerged that she could spend $2.2 million every day until the November 8 election without running out. And every month she widens her cash advantage over Trump.
