US secretary of state Rex Tillerson said he doesn’t believe there is “any imminent threat” from North Korea, including to the US territory of Guam.
Mr Tillerson said “Americans should sleep well at night” and that they should “have no concerns about this particular rhetoric of the last few days.”
He spoke to reporters on Wednesday after President Donald Trump and North Korea traded escalating threats of “fire,” with the North saying it was examining plans for attacking Guam.
He downplayed speculation that the threats move the US closer to a military option. Mr Tillerson said nothing he’s seen or knows of in the last day dramatically changed the situation.
He also said the Mr Trump was simply using language “that Kim Jong-Un would understand” when he gave Pyongyang an apocalyptic warning of “fire and fury” over its weapons programme.
