There are at least two books and several documentaries that have been made on Colleen Stan, known as ‘ the Girl in the Box’ in popular media, for she was locked away in a coffin for seven-years, let out only to be raped or tortured by the man who had abducted her in 1977. And now she had spoken up on her ordeal in an interview to People’s magazine.
Colleen Stan was hitchhiking, when she was given a lift by Cameron and Janice Hooker in 1977, she was only 20-years-old then. Colleen thought it was a safe bet because the couple had a baby with them and seemed trustworthy. But barely an hour into the ride, she found herself being threatened with a knife by Cameron, who then gagged her, tied her hands up and locked her in a box.
"I thought I was going to die," she said.
But what ensued was perhaps worse than death. Colleen was taken to the couple’s house in Red Bluff, California, where she was locked in a wooden box under their bed.
Cameron would only take her out of the box to sexually assault her or torture her. He felt like he could do anything to her body and would then lock her back in a coffin like box.

Recalling how she survived the torture, Colleen reveals, "I learned I could go anywhere in my mind. You just remove yourself from the real situation going on and you go somewhere else. You go somewhere pleasant, around people you love. Whatever makes you happy."
She was locked in the box for 23-hours a day and was forced to sign a contract where she agreed to be Cameron’s sex slave for life.
Before abducting Colleen, Cameron used to act out his sexual fetishes and love for bondage on his wife, but the couple agreed that they would replace her with someone else and that there would be no sex involved with the new person. But the ‘no sex’ agreement did not stay for long.
On the very first day, Colleen was allegedly tied up and suspended above the couple’s bed while they had sex below her. While for the first few days he just tortured her, he soon started raping her and penetrating her vaginally and anally with foreign objects.
Colleen finally managed to escape in 1984, with the help of Cameron’s wife Janice, who even testified against him in court. Janice finally decided to help her after seven long years because her husband expressed his desire to marry Colleen and she finally broke down when he said he wanted to get four more sex slaves.
While Janice escaped punishment due to her help, Cameron was sentenced to 104 years in prison for his brutal and savage crime.
Colleen’s ordeal has now been made into movie titled Girl in the Box, which will be releasing this weekend.
