Iran Says Attacks in Hormuz Misstep, Signals Fresh Talks with US: Report

The report said the attacks were carried out by a specific faction within Iran seeking to derail ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington

Washington DC: Iranian officials have privately informed advisers to US President Donald Trump that recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz were a mistake, according to a CBS News report citing American officials.

The report said the attacks were carried out by a specific faction within Iran seeking to derail ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

According to CBS News, the White House wants Iran to publicly acknowledge the mistake, which the Trump administration considers a violation of the ceasefire.

President Donald Trump has directed the US negotiating team, led by Vice President JD Vance, Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to continue talks with Iran in Muscat, Oman, which began on Saturday.

"They came back to the table and said, 'We screwed up. We made a mistake. Let's keep talking,'" a US official told CBS News.

Following the meeting in Oman, the US administration expects Iran to maintain its position that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open and continue operating as it did before the recent conflict, the report added.

The developments come as Qatari negotiators travel to Iran in an effort to reduce tensions and facilitate the resumption of US-Iran talks after recent military escalations.

Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi met Omani Foreign Minister Seyyed Badr Al-Busaidi in Muscat to discuss bilateral ties, regional developments, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, the two sides also discussed mechanisms to ensure the safe passage of ships under Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, while Oman reaffirmed its support for diplomacy to ease regional tensions.

Meanwhile, President Trump said on Friday that the United States had agreed to continue talks after Iran requested renewed negotiations, but maintained that the previous ceasefire between the two sides was "over."
