Local media houses reported that Deepthi and her friend were walking home and crossing the street to reach their house, when a dark coloured Kia Optima car struck them and fled the scene.
Deepthi, a resident of Guntur, went to the United States in 2023 to pursue her Masters of Sciences from the University of North Texas, and was just a month away from completing her degree in the university.
Speaking to the media, Pavan Vallamsetty, a roommate of Deepthi, said that she suffered from blood loss on the right side of her brain, while the other person suffered non-lethal injuries and underwent a minor surgery under the jaw.
A GoFundMe page was started by Anand, Deepthi’s cousin, to help raise money for her medical treatments. The page has raised more than $90,000 in less than four days. Deepthi’s body is expected to be repatriated to her hometown in Guntur by Saturday for the final rites.
