HYDERABAD: The Medchal police on Friday arrested 24-year-old Durga Prasad, a cab driver, for allegedly assaulting a woman during a group clash at a cigarette kiosk. Three others were arrested in relation to the clash.

Medchal Inspector A. Satyanarayana said that Prasad had asked the kiosk owner for a cigarette at closing time. When he refused, there was an altercation between the kiosk owner and Prasad.

Prasad called a group of people to the spot and so did the complainant and her family. As the groups clashed, Prasad allegedly attacked the victim and verbally abused her, the inspector said.


Medical PG aspirant duped of Rs 9.36 lakhs


Hyderabad: A medical PG aspirant was duped of Rs 9.36 lakh by a consultant who promised her a seat in a medical college in Bengaluru. Saroornagar police booked a case and started investigations.

According to the police, the 24-year-old victim had completed her MBBS in 2024 and was appearing for exams for postgraduation courses. The accused, P. Chandrashekar, contacted her and offered to help her secure a seat in the Bengaluru college.

He even went to her home to persuade her. Convinced, the victim and her family paid Chandrashekar Rs 9.36 lakh. When they stopped receiving updates, the student then approached Saroornagar police.


Assistant locomotive pilot trainee files case against colleague for issuing threats


Hyderabad: An assistant locomotive pilot trainee has filed case against a colleague for allegedly harassing her using slur words and issuing threats, at the Zonal Railway Training Insititute (ZRIT) in Moula Ali.

Malkajgiri police identified the accused as P. Anand Kumar, also a trainee. The victim stated that he would constantly call and message her. This had been going on since last year, and Kumar had not stopped bothering her though her brother and her father had tried to get him to stop.

According to the police, the victim lodged a complaint when the accused threatened her to meet him or he would ensure her marriage prospects were affected.


Boy convicted for riding bike, injuring woman

Hyderabad: A 14-year-old boy was convicted on Friday by Judge T. Madhavi, 5th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), for rash and negligent driving that caused serious injuries to a 60-year-old woman. The judge sentenced the juvenile to perform community service at a special home in Gajularamaram on the first and third Sundays of every month for one year under Section 18(c) of the Juvenile Justice Act.

The incident occurred on October 14, 2022, when the juvenile, riding a two-wheeler without a licence, struck a pedestrian near Hanuman Temple in Karkhana. The victim, Shiva Rajamma, suffered a severe head injury and was shifted to a hospital by locals and police.

The investigation revealed that the bike was given to the juvenile by Mohammed Mushtaq, who provided the vehicle despite being aware that the boy was a minor and did not possess a driving licence. His negligence ultimately led to the accident.

Assistant public prosecutor Anitha Deshmukh, who led the case, stated that eyewitness testimonies and medical records played a key role in securing the juvenile’s conviction.


Mother’s partner gets life for raping 5-yr-old


Hyderabad: A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined `15,000 by the XII Additional Sessions Judge T. Anitha for raping a five-year-old girl, who later died as a result of the abuse.

The horrific incident occurred when the victim’s mother, who was living with the accused, left her daughter in his care while she went to work. In her absence, the convict assaulted the child.

Upon returning, the mother noticed her daughter complaining of severe stomach pain. She soon discovered signs of abuse. The child passed away in June 2022. Even after her death, the accused threatened and prevented the grieving mother from visiting her daughter’s body.

The autopsy conducted after the death of the girl played a major role in confirming the sexual assault, said public prosecutor A. Ram Reddy. He stated, “During the trial, the main challenge was the medical report, as after the medical examination, a final report stated that the cause of death was due to a brain disease. However, during the cross-examination, it was identified that the death of the girl showed the signs of penetrative sexual assault that occurred one or two days before the girl’s death.” Furthermore, the accused confessed to the crime during interrogation, admitting to sexually assaulting the child.


AEE held for taking bribe


Hyderabad: The ACB arrested T. Ravi Kishore, assistant executive engineer (AEE) of the irrigation department, while he was accepting a bribe of `1 lakh on Friday. The officer had allegedly demanded `7 lakh.

According to the ACB, Kishore, AEE at Patancheru, Sangareddy district, was caught red-handed by the officials. The bribe was sought to issue an NoC for agricultural land in Gummadidala, which does not fall under the full tank level (FTL) and buffer zone of Erra Cheruvu.

The bribe amount was recovered from the dashboard of the officer’s car. A chemical test on paper inside the dashboard confirmed traces of the bribe money. The ACB officers arrested the accused and produced him before the ACB court. He was later remanded to judicial custody.

Minors driving vehicleswill be severely dealt with


HYDERABAD: The city traffic police will start cancellation of vehicle registrations if they are driven by minors. Concerned at the rising incidents of fatal accidents causes by minors at the wheel, the Hyderabad traffic police will launch a special enforcement drive from Saturday to curb this dangerous practice.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, underage individuals are strictly prohibited from driving vehicles.

If a minor is caught driving, the vehicle owner—typically the parent or registered owner—is also held accountable and faces legal consequences, said D. Joel Davis, joint commissioner city traffic.

Under Section 199A of the MV Act, 1988, offences by juveniles, violators will attract fine and/or imprisonment and registration of the vehicle will be suspended for t 12 months, Davis said.

The juvenile will not be eligible to obtain a learner driving licence until he attains the age of 25 years, Davis said.


Over `3.27 crore refunded to 54 cyber fraud victims in March


HYDERABAD: The city cybercrime unit (CCCU) secured the return of money stolen in cyberfrauds and handed over `3,27, 86,687 to 54 victims in March.

The CCCU acting with the support of the judiciary and the NCRB managed to freeze the lost amounts.

The victim were duped through different means, including stock trading, investment, courier, money laundering, QR, credit card and customer care frauds and APK file downloads.

As per court orders, banks returned `1,62,19,544 to victims in courier and money laundering fraud, city commissioner C.V. Anand said. Other frauds totalled `1,57,25,141,`43,310, `88,591, `3, 70,391 and `3, 39,700 respectively. The refund orders were passed by the XII ACMM Court.


Drunk man fails to break ATM, caught at liquor shop


Hyderabad: A man was arrested for attempting to break open an ATM using a kitchen knife while intoxicated. His sole motive was to get some money for his drinking. ATM in-charge Gangadhar Murthy filed a complaint with Kushaiguda police after receiving an alert about the incident in HB Colony, Tirumalanagar.

Police launched an investigation and, after reviewing CCTV footage inside the kiosk and surrounding areas, traced the suspect.

Detective inspector G. Venkateshwarlu identified the accused as Vikas Shankar Kulkarni, 37, a native of Sholapur. Recently, Kulkarni's wife, a native of Medak, left for her hometown with their son.

Police, while reviewing footage, found him not only inside the ATM kiosk but also wandering outside other establishments. His unsteady gait and body language suggested he was intoxicated. He was later traced to a nearby wine shop. Within a few hours of the complaint, police apprehended him.

Nakrekal police arrests three vehicle lifters, recovered 24 motor cycles


Nalgonda: Nakrekal police arrested three persons for allegedly stealing vehicles and recovered 24 motorcycles worth `18.2 lakh from their possession. The trio was identified as Paladugu Ashok of Nakrekal, Erpula Parashuramulu of Akkinepally and Boda Sairam of Tirumalagiri in Narketpally mandal.

Briefing the media, superintendent of police Sharat Chandra Pawar said that the police took the three accused into the custody during a vehicle checking exercise at Indira Gandhi statue in Nakrekal at 6 pm when they showed false documents for a motorcycle.

Upon being questioned closely, they confessed to the theft of motorcycles. Police said the trio targeted vehicles parked at hotels and bars. Of the 24 motorcycles they allegedly stole, nine were from Nakrekal, Suryapet and Choutuppal (one each), and in Hyderabad, Hayatnagar (three), LB Nagar (five), Vanasthalipuram and Chaitanyapuri (one each). They sold 13 motorcycles and hid the 13 other vehicles at an under construction building behind the residence of Ashok.

Man gets 10 yrs for assaulting minor


Hyderabad: A 43-year-old autorickshaw driver was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined `15,000 on Friday by a fast-track court in Rangareddy district at LB Nagar. The court convicted him of sexually assaulting his friend’s minor daughter and ordered him to pay `5 lakh in compensation to the victim.

The convict was found guilty of cheating, kidnapping and rape as well as under the Pocso Act.

The assault occurred in 2021 within the Pahadi Shareef police station area. At the time, the victim’s father, who was unwell, had entrusted his daughter to the convict’s care. He deceived the child with false promises before sexually assaulting her.

The case was presented by additional public prosecutors Sunitha and D. Raghu, who secured the conviction.
