Sony will raise the price of its popular PlayStation 5 video-game console to $550 from $500 in the US, following rival console-makers Microsoft and Nintendo in price hikes after tariffs increased the cost of imports.
“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” Sony wrote Wednesday in a blog post. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting on August 21.”
Sony has sold more than 56 million PlayStation 5 consoles since its 2020 release, according to the company’s website, beating Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and X in sales.
After the US implemented tariffs to encourage onshore manufacturing, Nintendo and Microsoft raised the price of their older consoles and accessories. Nintendo attributed the change, implemented after its Switch 2 console launch, to “market conditions.”
“They’re trying to spread the impacts of tariffs across whatever they can,” said Michael Pachter, a managing director at Wedbush Securities Inc. “Components largely come from places outside the US. Manufacturing is definitely outside the US.”
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will cost $500 and the Pro model will cost $750.
