Perplexity May Replace Gemini as Default AI Assistant on Samsung, Motorola Phones: Report

The talks with Samsung are still in the early stages but Perplexity has already reached an agreement with Motorola, and the partnership is expected to be announced this month

Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity is reportedly in talks with smartphone giant Samsung and Lenovo’s Motorola to integrate its virtual assistant into their phones.
If successful, this move would make Perplexity AI the default AI assistant on Samsung and Motorola phones, replacing Google’s Gemini.
According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, the talks with Samsung are still in the early stages. However, Perplexity has already reached an agreement with Motorola, and the partnership is expected to be announced this month. Motorola is reportedly planning to discuss the collaboration during an event on April 24.
The potential deal with Samsung is more complex due to the South Korean tech giant’s deep partnership with Google. Google powers many of Samsung’s AI features and is the default search engine on its devices. Despite this, Samsung has been fostering a positive relationship with Perplexity, and its investment arm, NEXT, backed the AI startup last year, Bloomberg reported.
Samsung is also reportedly planning another investment in Perplexity, which is currently in discussions with investors for a new funding round, the report further stated.
Currently, both Motorola and Samsung offer their own AI systems alongside Google Gemini on their smartphones. While Motorola holds a relatively small share of the global smartphone market, Samsung has 20% global market share. A successful partnership with both brands would significantly boost Perplexity’s image globally.
Perplexity, founded in 2022, is known for its real-time results, search engine-like interface, and in-depth research capabilities. In March, Perplexity announced a partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG to build an AI-powered phone, which is expected to be unveiled later this year and go on sale in 2026.
