PayPal has partnered with India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and others to launch a global platform for cross-border payments, Reuters reported.
The platform, called PayPal World, is expected to launch later this year and will enable interoperability between local payment systems and PayPal, the company said.
PayPal has partnered with India’s NPCI - payments authority that operates UPI, Brazil’s Mercado Pago, Tencent Holdings’ Tenpay Global and Venmo. PayPal plans to add more partners going forward.
India has been in talks with countries in Africa and South America to build digital payment systems modeled on UPI, reported Reuters.
According to data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI drives 83% of all digital transactions in the country. UPI usage has surged 4.4 times from 2021 to 2024, reaching 172 billion transactions annually, the report said.
