OpenAI is releasing an update to its flagship model called GPT-5.1, offered in two variants: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.
OpenAI describes GPT-5.1 as an update that makes ChatGPT “smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and more adaptable to your preferences.”
According to the company, GPT-5.1 Instant is “warmer, more intelligent, and better at following your instructions” than its predecessor, while GPT-5.1 Thinking is “now easier to understand and faster on simple tasks, and more persistent on complex ones.”
The AI company said both models will roll out to users this week, and that older GPT-5 models will remain available under the “legacy models” dropdown for paid subscribers for three months.
OpenAI also noted that GPT-5.1 Instant is more conversational than earlier chat models. In a post on X, the company said it includes eight chat styles, available in the personalization tab: Default, Professional, Candid, Quirky, Friendly, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical.
According to the release, OpenAI is also “experimenting with the ability to tune ChatGPT’s characteristics directly from personalization settings,” a feature that will roll out to some users later this week.
"GPT-5.1 is out! It's a nice upgrade. I particularly like the improvements in instruction following, and the adaptive thinking. The intelligence and style improvements are good too," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X.
The GPT-5.1 announcement comes just weeks after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas AI-powered web browser. It comes with “agent mode”, available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.
