OpenAI has launched two new o-series models—o3 and o4-mini—which are trained to think longer before responding.
The company stated that these two new o-series models are the smartest they have released to date. “For the first time, our reasoning models can agentically use and combine every tool within ChatGPT—this includes searching the web, analyzing uploaded files and other data with Python, reasoning deeply about visual inputs, and even generating images,” said OpenAI.
The o3 model excels in coding, math, science, and visual perception. According to OpenAI, this model is ideal for complex queries whose answers may not be immediately obvious. o3 also performs well on visual tasks like analyzing images, charts, and graphics.
The o4-mini is a smaller model optimized for fast and cost-efficient reasoning. It also performs well in math, coding, and visual tasks, and supports higher usage limits than o3.
Both models provide more useful and verifiable responses than their predecessors and offer a more natural and conversational feel, said OpenAI.
o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high are currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, replacing o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high. Free users can access o4-mini by selecting the ‘Think’ option in the composer when submitting a query. Rate limits across all plans remain unchanged.
