OpenAI in Talks to Acquire AI Coding Tool Windsurf for $3 Billion: Report

Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date

OpenAI is in talks to acquire AI coding tool Windsurf for $3 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date. The move could help the ChatGPT maker compete more directly in the AI coding assistant sector. However, the deal is not yet finalized and could still change or fall apart, Bloomberg noted.
This acquisition would position OpenAI to better compete with companies offering AI coding services, including Anthropic, Microsoft’s GitHub, and Anysphere. Windsurf, founded in 2021, would join the list of startups acquired by OpenAI, which currently includes vector database company Rockset and Multi.
According to the report, Windsurf was in talks with investors including Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst to raise funding at a $3 billion valuation.
The company raised $150 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, valuing Windsurf at $1.25 billion, the report added.
According to PitchBook data, Windsurf has raised over $200 million in venture capital funding.
In March, OpenAI secured a $40 billion funding round led by SoftBank, valuing the AI company at $300 billion.
