Samsung's makes its Always-On Display live

The Always-On Display can now display GIFs along with date and time.

Samsung can be credited for some of the most stylish features to be seen on smartphones in the current times. They made curved edge displays desirable and then they used their great AMOLED displays to bring an Always-On Display (AOD). In our past few reviews of some premium Samsung smartphones, the Always-On Display has come as a desirable yet productive feature, showing useful information at all times. Samsung keeps on updating it and the latest version makes the Always-On Display lively.

The latest update to Samsung’s Always-On Display adds the ability to embed GIFs on the display. Users can choose from a limited number of AOD-optimised funky GIFs such as animated hearts or cartoon characters and add custom GIFs. If the user chooses the latter, the AOD requires the GIFs to be of a particular length and should be in no other format other than .gif (no .webp animated images). Do note that the GIF will only animate once after you lock the screen — it doesn’t keep on playing on loop.

Currently, the GIF support for Always-On Display is only available for Samsung’s flagship offerings from this year and the last year — the Galaxy S8, Note 8 and Galaxy S9. The update is available via the Galaxy Apps store.
