Ahead of WWDC slated for June 4th, Apple is planning to unveil its new iOS 12 for the iPhones’ line-up. We still do not know what features are expected to be revealed at the event, the company had done a great job keeping it discreet. However, a new report has surfaced online that Apple might be unlocking the NFC chips on its iPhones with the new OS update for a broader use.
A report from The Information suggests that Apple might finally be lifting off its limitations on the NFC chips in their iPhones. This means developers can now access the NFC chip functionality and can embed features like card transactions at public transportations, hotel door key and home security lock unlocking etc.
Previously, Apple had stuck its NFC chip in the iPhones to Apple Pay only, which practically diminished the purpose of near field connection for being restricted to only one service. According to GSMArena, Apple had initially made its step towards allowing third-party apps to access its NFC chip by introducing CoreNFC framework with iOS 11. But, this access still was very limited, which meant that the apps didn't have write access and the API hadn't allowed the applications to use the NFC chip unless they were in the background.
Furthermore, the report suggests that this Apple's new feature is already implemented for the iPhone employees at the Apple Park. They are reportedly using iPhones for their access to the inside of the park building by scanning it near a ‘contactless terminal’ placed at the entrance of the gate. Apple had partnered with HID Global to develop these terminals at the Apple Park.
Moreover, the report also states that the company is already developing a system in collaboration with Cubic, which eventually allows users to open their hotel rooms, automated homes, and can be used in daily commutes like a transit card as well.
So lastly, we can expect Apple to be unveiling its new NFC features at the WWDC next month.
