Apple shelved plans to remove the iPhone X's lightning port, thankfully

In a bid to move towards its wireless future, Apple had plans to remove the charging port on the iPhone X.

In 2016, when Apple introduced the iPhone 7, the world had witnessed a sort of revolution as Apple had ditched the headphone jack in a move towards their wireless future. The world has still not fully recovered it and there are some people who have still not upgraded from their iPhone 6s because later models did not have the 3.5mm jack.

While most of us are just recovering over the demise of the headphone jack on the iPhone, a new report by Bloomberg states that Apple had plans to ditch the lightning connector.

We know about Apple’s wireless future but it seems that the company had plans to usher it in a lot sooner than we had realised. The report notes, “Apple designers eventually hope to remove most of the external ports and buttons on the iPhone, including the charger, according to people familiar with the company’s work. During the development of the iPhone X, Apple weighed removing the wired charging system entirely. That wasn’t feasible at the time because wireless charging was still slower than traditional methods. Including a wireless charger with new iPhones would also significantly raise the price of the phones.”

While the report notes that Apple had considered removing the wired charging system, we don’t know how much of a consideration it actually was. Whatever the case may be, we are grateful that these plans have been shelved, for now.
