Samsung to start working on 7th-gen OLED displays: report

A new report from South Korea claims that Samsung to start working on its seventh-generation OLED panels.

Samsung is expected to begin work on 7th-gen OLED displays anytime soon. A new South-Korean report claims that the company’s latest move will give Samsung Display a boost against its rivals.

According to The Investor, which cites an analyst report, the seventh-generation OLED panels from Samsung will feature an impressive 800ppi pixel density. “Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics that dominates more than 95 percent of organic light-emitting diode panels for smartphones, will be seeking to further widen its gap with rivals by speeding up the production of the larger seventh-generation OLED panels,” the report began.

The report went on to suggest that an analyst from the company's new A4 production line claimed that the production will start as early as in the second quarter of 2018. However, the analyst said that securing necessary equipment such as LTPS-FTF, or low temperature polycrystalline silicon-thin film transistor, and FMM, or fine metal mask, based deposition system, can be an issue because equipment manufacturers are focusing on those for the six-generation panels for now.

“Samsung Display did operate production lines for the eight-generation OLED panels for TVs. So it could recycle LTPS-FTF it used at the time,” the analyst said. “Samsung Display has continued research to diversify its OLED portfolio to include foldable OLED, chip-on-plastic OLED and 800ppi high-resolution OLED. With the possible production of seventh-generation panels, it would continue to maintain its dominant market position for years,” he further added.
