Redmi Note 7 teased, India launch imminent

Xiaomi's Managing Director has teased the upcoming handset in a unique tweet.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 was unveiled earlier this month and one of its most alluring features was that it will come with a huge 48MP camera. Since then, the question on everyone’s mind was as to when would the handset launch in India, as this is one of the strongest markets for the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. In a rather unique tweet, Managing Director Manu Jain has tweeted an image of himself with CEO Lei Jun with the Redmi Note 7 in their hands and states that Xiaomi’s going to turn the industry upside down as an amazing 48MP is coming.

This cryptic tweet only spells the arrival of just one handset — the Redmi Note 7. As of now it is unclear when the handset will be announced for India but considering that Manu Jain has already shown it off, the launch date could be just around the corner. It could even be as soon as this month’s end as previous rumours have suggested that it could launch by January 30.

Earlier this month, Xiaomi spun off Redmi into its own brand and the Redmi 7 is the first handset to be launched under it. The latest offering boasts some incredible specifications such as a 48MP camera with a Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor, a large screen, a powerful battery, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC.

The Redmi Note 7 comes packing a 6.3-inch LCD display with a waterdrop notch that plays home to the selfie camera with Gorilla Glass on top. The handset sports a Full HD+ display with an 84 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The Note 7 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor that’s clocked at 2.2GHz. The handset comes in three configurations — 3GB/32GB, 4GB/64GB and 6GB/64GB along with support for a microSD card.

The main camera is clearly the biggest selling point of the new phone. Its native resolution is 48 MP, but due to its Quad-bayer filter, it's better used for outputting 12 MP images with large 1.6 μm pixels and real-time HDR. There is a secondary 5 MP shooter for AI purposes and Portrait Mode. The selfie snapper, tucked in the notch, is 13 MP.

Xiaomi has used a 4000mAh battery in the Note 7 and it supports Qualcomm’s fast charge technology. The handset comes with a USB Type-C port with a 5V/2A charger but it can be upgraded with a fast charging adaptor which will enable 9V/2A charging that will juice up the battery from 0 to 100 per cent in 1 hour 43 minutes.

Lastly, The handset comes in three colour variants — Blue, Twilight Gold and Black.
