In an estimated figure of 60 million 4G feature phone units to sell globally this year about half of it are estimated to be sold in India alone.

“Close to 200 million 4G Feature phones to be potentially sold in India in next five years bridging the digital divide, an opportunity for OEMs as well as Operators,” Counterpoint wrote in its analyses report.

According to the team, chipset brand such as Qualcomm with its latest Qualcomm 205 platform, designed for 4G LTE feature phones, is capable to drive 4G growth starting end of Q2 2017.

Unfortunately, the incoming of more 2G feature phones is hindering the process primarily due to the “pricing,” “lack of literacy,” “lack of need of mobile internet and related applications as well as a mind block of a steep learning curve to upgrade to a 4G smartphone.”

For a major portion of the mobile users in the country is for voice calls and texts.

“In markets, such as India, operators such as Reliance Jio are attracting lots of rural 2G users to leapfrog to its 4G network by offering free unlimited VoLTE calls,” Counterpoint added.

Key players including Micromax, itel, Lava, Jio, Nokia and so forth, in the report, have been advised to watch out in the 4G segment.
