iPhone 8's new rumoured feature is a game-changer
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming Apple iPhone 8 even though we are months away from the announcement date.
What we know so far is that the speculated device is set feature a stainless steel chassis with a glass face and back instead of aluminium housing, a new OLED display and the Touch ID fingerprint that will be embedded into the display itself. Now a new report published by 9to5Mac suggests that the upcoming iPhone 8 may feature a major upgrade to the front camera.
The report quotes Apple analyst KGI Ming-Chi Kuo, who says that the new components will be able to merge the depth information with the 2D images from the front camera for applications including face recognition, iris recognition and 3D selfies. The analyst further goes on to say that combination of front camera and 3D sensor would allow the iPhone to generate a 3D selfie which could be used in augmented reality.
It’s possible that Apple might use algorithms developed by PrimeSense that it acquired back in 2013. This will also potentially remove the need for a large dual-camera iris system. At the moment, very little is known about Apple’s plans with the new rumoured 3D camera.
