Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 smartphone is unlikely to feature a curved edge display despite using an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel having a flexible nature, reported The Korean Herald.
For the first time, Apple will be shifting from liquid crystal display (LCD) to OLED display panels for its iPhone models. The firm's confirmation on usage of OLED panels in iPhone 8 raised speculations around presence of a curved display, also adopted by its rival in OLED display-based Samsung Galaxy Note 8. However, people familiar with the matter says it is unlikely to do so. “Apple is highly unlikely to follow the same design of its rival’s. Instead of the curved edge display, it will have a flat screen with bezel-less on the top and bottom alongside the two sides,” a source told Korean Herald.
Interestingly, Samsung’s own display unit is Apple’s sole OLED supplier. The firm ordered 70 million panels with Samsung Electronics for use in the iPhone 8 models. But unfortunately, the unit is facing hard time to meet outstripping supply, which may result in iPhone 8 delay. “Apple may unveil its iPhone 8 in September, but it is predicted to go on sale in October or November,” said Taipei-based KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo.
Furthermore, Apple has also been reported to drop a fingerprint sensor under the display as the “OLED panel technology being used by Apple for the iPhone 8 is not yet ready to embed TouchID under display”. Instead, the firm agreed to include a “two-step fingerprint and facial recognition technology” in the flagship. In fact, the iPhone 8 is known to feature an advanced 3D face scanner system which can recognise faces even when lying flat on a surface to unlock the device.
