OnePlus 3 does not use 6GB RAM, says CEO Carl Pei
The new smartphone on the block OnePlus 3 is already garnering positive feedback from users for its stark design and performance but a new speed test between Samsung’s S7 Edge and OP3 suggested that the former emerges as a clear winner.
The same video was brought to the notice of OnePlus CEO Carl Pei by a Twitter user. And that is when Pei spilled the beans about the OP3’s tweaked RAM management. Irrespective of having 6GB of RAM, the device does not use the whole of it to strike a perfect balance between power and efficiency.
One of the first things Pei pointed out was the fact that the S7 Edge used in the video had an Exynos chip while the OP3 uses a Snapdragon 820 and the comparison is not fare.
He further went on to say that the strategy to scale down the total RAM capacity is an effort to give ‘normal’ users a mix of good battery life and decent performance. He said that the 3,000mAh battery works best with the RAM throttled down.
However, this does not mean that users who want power cannot modify their devices to attain maximum performance. Pei said that the company is making its kernel files available to third party ROM developers, who have the liberty to use the 6GB Ram to its optimum capacity.
.@LucaDuci (number of parallel execution threads). Expect 3P ROMs to have their own take on this number. Any other questions? ☺ï¸

Well, the fact still remains that power users who want to utilise all 6GB RAM have to depend on third party ROMs which is not exactly what a majority on people are looking forward to.
That said, we feel the OP3 works just fine for even power users as not many people run more than 4-5 apps simultaneously. It can be concluded that the OP3 is not as capable in power management as the Samsung S7 Edge but it does not take anything away from the OP3, as it retails at almost half the price of the former.
