Xiaomi Mi 8 could feature in-display fingerprint scanner

Leaked video shows in-display fingerprint sensor in action on the alleged Xiaomi Mi 8.

Xiaomi has been a busy brand since the start of 2018. They have been on a launch spree, rolling out new devices across various price points one after the other across various markets. A few months ago, Xiaomi had said that they would unveil Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset on their next flagship smartphone, the Mi 7. However, Xiaomi ended up debuting the SD 845 on the Mi MIX 2S, with no indication of whether there will be a successor to Mi 6. However, after announcing a new product launch slated for a May 23 launch, several leaks on the Internet have confirmed that Xiaomi will be unveiling the Mi 8 flagship and one of its interesting features will be an in-display fingerprint sensor.

A leaked video posted by Slashleaks shows a Xiaomi smartphone utilising the in-display fingerprint sensor. According to the video, the Mi 8 will be sporting an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is most likely to be sourced from Qualcomm or Synaptics. Since there’s an in-display sensor, it appears that the Mi 8 will be relying on an AMOLED display, thereby making it one of the first Xiaomi phones to switch from an IPS LCD panel. The device is also seen running on MIUI 9.

However, the video comes from an unofficial source, which is why one should not believe it entirely. That said, a host of other rumours on the Internet suggests that we might be looking at the Mi 8 on May 23. A previous report suggested that Xiaomi might also be debuting its own take on hardware-based 3D facial recognition technology, similar to Apple’s FaceID on the iPhone X, which also means there could be a display notch on top. The presence of a Snapdragon 845 SoC with 8GB of RAM is also expected to make an appearance. Stay tuned for all the information regarding the Mi 8 flagship.
