Samsung's cheaper iPad alternative under wraps

Samsung could unveil an alternative to the budget iPad 2018 model.

Apple has been trying to expand its reach into the budget segments of both tablets and smartphones by launching cheaper versions of its iPhones and iPads. The iPhone SE is the entry point to the iPhone club whereas the iPad 2018 serves the same for the exclusive iPad club. The formula has sort of worked for them, with Apple seeing great profits from these devices. Looking at this, Samsung is also rumoured to do the same with its Galaxy Tab series of tablets.

SamMobile, the one publication who specialises in breaking latest rumours regarding Samsung, has claimed to unearth information related to a device that could be Samsung’s answer to the budget iPad models. The device could be called the Galaxy Tab Advanced 2 and could launch alongside the rumoured flagship Galaxy Tab S4 tablet. The information comes from a support page from Samsung’s official website that lists a device by the codename of SM-T583. No specifications hav been mentioned yet, but the chances of this being the successor to the Galaxy Tab A from 2016 are high. Rumours also suggest that Samsung could rollout dedicated hardware for the model such as detachable keyboard, mice and a stylus.

Doing a budget tablet is a tricky move as it requires manufacturers to aim for the right amount of balance between affordability as well as practicality. Samsung relies on Google’s Android OS for all of its Galaxy range of devices. Since Android is an open source OS, Samsung’s tablets usually lack in the quality of service that Apple’s similarly priced iPads manage to achieve — courtesy Apple’s highly optimised software for its hardware. We can only hope that Samsung goes for beefier internals to stand a fair chance against the iPad, which is presently the benchmark in the segment.
