Will Apple consider implementing this new 3D Touch feature?

A UX engineer believes that the current 3D Touch feature is broken and suggests a new idea on how exactly this feature can be used.

Apple's 3D Touch feature is being criticised once again. Despite the feature when first introduced to be gimmicky, and most of the users hardly cared about it. A user experience (UX) engineer named – Eliz Kılıç took Medium as a platform to criticise this feature and believes that the 3D Touch is broken.

Four years after its launch, Eliz still believes that many people don't use this feature or they might still not know how to use this, including the tech-savvy people. Eliz says this is because Apple doesn't distinguish in its UI all over the iOS on where to hard press on the screen or what all can be 3D touched.

"What would happen if we decide to make all links same colour and style as the regular text? People would not know what to click on right? Why is 3D Touch be any different? We rely on our vision to decide actionability before anything else.

If you can’t distinguish 3D Touchable buttons from those that are not, how are you supposed to know you can press on them? " she questioned in her post.

For instance, Eliz has compared on the mostly used Control Center in the iOS stating there's isn't any indication on what all toggles can be 3D touched in the menu.

"3D Touch is not a gimmick anymore. You need to know you should be pressing hard on the “4 Button Control” to access “Personal Hotspot” or “AirDrop” toggles," she said.

The engineer even has a solution for this issue which is – to the users to know what toggles can be hard pressed, she wants to add tiny visual cues on the 3D-touch enabled toggles and also calls them as 'Force Decorators," which is obvious since the other name for 3D touch is Force Touch.

"My solution is adding a line on bottom-right of things that can be 3D Touched. Let’s call them Force Decorators (with reference to Force Touch). 3D Touch is missing the most obvious thing to be mainstream. Visual cues. I think this is the answer."

These decorators can also be implemented on Lock Screen notifications and also in the Mail app, according to her. The idea appears to be cool and very useful and we can hope that Apple considers this feature and implement on the further iOS updates. This implementation can surely help all the iOS users to make use of most lowly used 3D or Force Touch feature.
