LG plans to bring their first OLED smartphone later this year: report
LG is taking the leap of introducing OLED panel display to its upcoming smartphones following the footsteps of rival smartphone brands Apple and Samsung.
According to a report by The Korea Herald, LG is “finally jumping on the OLED bandwagon” and will be “rolling out its first smartphone model with the display in second half of the year”.
The upcoming V30, successor to the LG V20, has been listed out to debut the OLED display, according to a source cited in the report.
The panel could then be featured on another flagship phone, tentatively called the G7, slated to be launched next year, the report added.
“Most OLED screens produced at LG Display's Gumi E5 plant in the second half will be used for its sister firm LG Electronics’ smartphones starting with the V30,” the source told The Korean Herald.
In his knowledge, LG will begin OLED panel production in July this year.
Use of LCD display has been in long run for many smartphone manufacturers, but since major players like Apple and Samsung have shifted their interest to OLED panels over LCD, others are favouring it too for their upcoming models.
The report noted that so far Samsung is ruling the OLED display industry using OLED for almost 70 per cent of its smartphones and securing over 95 per cent of the mobile OLED market.
In fact, Samsung is the sole supplies of Apple’s first OLED iPhone expected to be unveiled later this year.
On the other hand, LG’s display-making sister firm LG display is still making efforts to ramp-up its OLED production to reach the similar yield rate of its rival Samsung Display.
“It may take some time for LG Display to reach the similar yield rate of its rival Samsung Display. There are a range of issues to solve such as patents and supply chains for OLED equipment and materials,” the report citing anonymous display analyst
