Portronics Tring: A Bluetooth lost key finder
Portronics recently launched a unique device, which is as small as a coin, but does a big job of helping you find lost stuff. Not that it can find everything for you, it can help you find itself, using your smartphone.
Tring, a Bluetooth tag or device is as small as a coin and clips on to anything you can think of — a bag, keys, anything. It comprises of a Bluetooth trans-receiver that pairs with your smartphone and stays idle till called for. An app on the smartphone communicates with Tring using Bluetooth to keep a tag on the device’s whereabouts. Using the Bluetooth LE network, Tring keeps pinging the smartphone in short intervals to make sure it is in range — usually up to 50 metres. If the device and the smartphone are further than the said range, the smartphone will alert you that Tring is out of range and vibrates to inform you that you have left it behind.
So simply attach the Tring to your keys or any valuable, or simply leave it in your bag after pairing it. If you are away from your said valuable, then your Tring smartphone app will alert you if you have forgotten it behind, and well in time — within 50 meters of you walking away.
Tring can operate at a distance of 50 meters, if in direct line of sight. Depending on the obstacles in between, the range will cut short accordingly. Tring operates on a single 3V CR2030 battery, and has a battery life of up to one year in full operation mode. The Tring is built with a plastic housing, is waterproof and features a small buzzer, loud enough to get your attention. If you misplace your ‘Tringed’ valuable, you can simply find it from your smartphone. All you need to do is pull up the app, hit the find device function and Tring will start beeping as soon as it is in range.
What if you forget your valuable somewhere further than its range? For example, what if you forgot your keys, or your bag, along with Tring in a restaurant and you have reached home already? And now you don’t remember where you have left your valuables. Tring’s app comes into action and will be a life saver for you too. Simply pull up the app, and you can find Tring on the map. Yes, the Tring app makes a note of where (location) it last lost communication with the tag and mark it for you on the map. You can even use Tring to help you find where you parked your car.
Tring also has a reverse functionality — you can also find your phone, but only if you have lost it in your house or office. Tring has a small button, which when pressed, makes the smartphone ring to help you find it. However, the smartphone will only ring when it is within range of Tring.
Lastly, Tring also has one more functionality trick up its sleeve — the device can also be used as a camera remote trigger. The button on your Tring can act as a shutter release for your camera so you can take selfies with ease.
Tring is available for a price of Rs 775. It weighs just 14g and measures 38 x 38 x 9mm. Bundled along with it is a key ring, an extra CR2030 battery and a tool to open the Tring for battery replacement.
Tring is a must have device is you are moving around with important valuables. You can even use Tring for your kids, pets and vehicles so you are instantly alerted once they are out of your range. You can also use multiple Tring tags together and name each one accordingly on your app.
