Gionee A1 Plus: Seriously selfie!

While improving its front camera software, Gionee has also beefed up the rear end.

The front camera of a smartphone is increasingly being called the ‘selfie camera’, because that is what users increasingly look for a camera to capture themselves and their friends to best effect. Gionee understands and panders to this narcissistic urge, and while marketing in India uses terms like ‘selfiestan’ to drive home the message.

The recently launched Gionee A1 Plus improves on the earlier A1 model in multiple ways:

The full HD screen is larger at 6 inches; the battery is beefier at 4550mAh, yet charges fully in about 90 minutes. It has a 4GB RAM and the storage is 64 GB it can take another 256GB in a microSD card. If you do that, you sacrifice one of the two SIM slots. The remaining microSIM slot can connect you to the latest 4G VoLTE service.

The selfie camera at 20MP with flash is one of the best on the front side of today’s phones. So much that it makes for a good self portrait and the A1 Plus is as creative as it gets. It offers other software enhancers, a Face Beauty tool that can make faces smoother, whiter, slimmer and even touch up the eyes to make them more prominent. While loaded with the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, Gionee has added its proprietary user interface Amigo 4 to the A1 Plus. Unlike many others, this is not too overwhelming and it also lives up to the proud Made in India label by including some very useful tools for an Indian user including the UC Browser option. The Indian government’s mandate to include an SOS option has been met one can press the on-off button three times. Gionee sticks to the MediaTek Helio octacore processor and ensures movie watchers have a good experience by putting in MaxxAudio stereo speakers that can be quite loud. At Rs 26,999, the Gionee A1 Plus is significantly pricier than its predecessor but the improved cameras make it worth the extra money.
