Nokia joins the race with foldable smartphones

New reports suggests that Nokia might soon join the race for producing foldable smartphones.

Major smartphone makers including Samsung, Apple and LG have already hinted their plans to produce foldable smartphones in the coming years. If the reports are to believed then Nokia might soon join the race.

While Korean giant Samsung will make its foldable handsets, Apple is more likely to outsource them from other companies who already have this technology. LG will be using its own technology ordered by other companies.

If Nokia wants to keep in tow with the market, then it needs to bring similar devices to against the likes of Samsung, Apple and LG as well as other technology giants striving to unveil their foldable smartphones.

According to a new report, Nokia has already filed for a patent that describes a foldable device. The patent granted by the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) is not the first of its kind. The main idea of a foldable smartphone foldable technology is to try to provide customers with larger displays in a pocket-sized form factor.

The patent reads: “in this way it is possible to provide a pocket size device with a relatively large display (for example, a 6, 7 or 8 inch display or larger).”

Nokia is also expected to have its second Android smartphone revealed next month at Mobile World Congress and will be dubbed as the Nokia 8
