It has been a few short weeks since the iPhone XS/XS Max and iPhone XR have been launched and the rumours of future iPhones have already begun trickling in. The latest bit of information comes via Softpedia who state that Apple has filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) which detail a smartphone that comes with a camera and an array of sensors housed under the display.

The report adds that the patent filed by Apple on June 27 at USPTO details the invention as “Apparatus, systems and methods for camera integration with a cover glass and for processing cover glass to provide a camera window for an electronic device are disclosed."

The patent goes on to read, “The apparatus, systems and methods are especially suitable for cover glasses, or displays (e.g., LCD displays), assembled in small form factor electronic devices such as handheld electronic devices (e.g., mobile phones, media players, personal digital assistants, remote controls, etc.)."

So this would mean that upcoming iPhones would have an edge-to-edge display with all their sensors housed underneath the display; a similar feat which Samsung is rumoured to be working on for its 10th-anniversary smartphone — the Galaxy S10.

The patent also goes on to mention what sort of materials Apple will use to build the display cover glass with it stating, “For example, aluminosilicate glass (e.g., DVTS from Corning) is one suitable choice for the glass material for the cover glass. Other examples of glass materials include, but are not limited to including, soda lime, borosilicate, and the like."

It should be mentioned that Apple and Samsung aren’t the only brands seeking to put the camera under the display with rumours claiming that Oppo and LG are the other two manufacturers looking to implement a line-up of sensors under the display.
