Huawei Mate 20 to use a 6.9-inch screen: Report

The Huawei Mate 20 may feature the largest screen size amongst high-end flagships.

It is pretty clear that smartphones with a large footprint are here to stay. This year, two of the biggest brands in smartphone technology will be unveiling handsets with screen sizes above 6-inches. The phones that are getting a lot of web space are the iPhone X Plus, a larger version to the 2017 iPhone X and the 2018 Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the successor to the Galaxy Note 8.

As per a report, Huawei has placed an order with Samsung Displays for 6.9-inch AMOLED panels that are intended for devices to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2018 or in early 2019. This puts it in the time frame of the Mate series which usually launches in the fourth quarter of the year. The Huawei Mate handset to be launched in this period is dubbed the Mate 20. The brand has ordered for flat panels and not curved ones.

The Apple iPhone X Plus is expected to arrive with a display size of 6.46-inches while the Galaxy Note 9’s display is believed to measure 6.38-inches. With the latest leak, it appears that the Huawei Mate 20 will tower over both handsets as it will feature a display size of 6.9-inches.

The reason behind Huawei opting for such a big display is completely to do with the Chinese audience. Huawei has a giant following in China and they want their status in the country to grow. Chinese consumers prefer handsets with a large display so this makes sense for Huawei to target the Mate 20 at them.

The report notes that the Apple iPhone X Plus is being developed with the Chinese consumer in mind. Huawei may opt for such a large screen size to stop Apple from moving in on their market.
