The industry analysts say that Apple might reintroduce Touch ID with an in-display fingerprint sensor in its 2021 iPhones. The technology is expected to be included along with Apple’s Face ID facial recognition technology and that the two security methods are expected to complement each other. First appeared in Vivo’s X20 Plus UD early last year, in-display fingerprint sensors have been incorporated by many devices. However, the shortcoming of the sensors in these devices, which comprise high power consumption, a small sensing area size, thick sensing modules, and difficulties in production, has been a reason why Apple has been taking time to develop its own sensor.
The company is expected to be working on the technology itself since 2017, when it filed a patent for an in-display fingerprint sensor of its own. Apple expects to come up with a technology to overcome the above mentioned limitations, which it expects to attain by introducing an ultrasonic fingerprint sensing solution. In addition to being used in iPhones, the technology is expected to be a better fit for the Apple Watch which doesn’t include any form of biometric security, and relies on a PIN code.
