Samsung S8 is fragile, says electronics insurer
Samsung let loose its design probabilities and out of it was born the S8/S8+, one of the best designs of 2017, yet. The S8 incorporates the Infinity Display and a glass back which looks beautiful but makes it rather fragile. A number of drop tests performed have shown the Galaxy S8 can break rather easily, thus resulting in loose glass and star burst on the display and rear panel.
Although Samsung has provided the latest version of the Corning Glass coating; tests conducted by electronics insurer SquareTrade have shown that the glass is unable to withstand drops or tumbles. The insurer has stated that the Galaxy S8 is the first phone they have tested which “cracked on the first drop on all sides,” mostly because the smartphone is covered with glass on the front and rear panel.
However, the chances of the smartphone breaking its Infinity Display (S8/S8+) usually depends on how carefully users handle their devices. Despite having Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides, the smartphone is susceptible to breakage under certain conditions.
Furthermore, the Galaxy S8 was the most breakable smartphone put through dropping and tumbling tests conducted by the insurer. Still, there are a number of durability tests that shows the Gorilla Glass 5 doing a pretty good job of protecting the device from scratches.
Screen replacements for the Galaxy S8 aren’t expensive
Motherboard publication spoke with a number of independent repair shops, who stated the Infinity Display can be replaced rather easily. The actual amount that customers would have to pay for a replacement screen starts at about $200, which is $50 to $100 less than the price of replacement screens for last year’s Galaxy S7.
The price of a replacement screen for an iPhone 7 was about $300 at launch. The prices for the Galaxy S8 start at about $750, while the Galaxy S8+ costs more with its larger display and battery size. But considering the phone’s retail price and new display design, the price for the replacement screen is quite affordable, should the device’s screen break for any reason.
