iPhone, Apple Watch still in demand among teens: survey

Smartphone are becoming ubiquitous among young people. A survey by Piper Jaffray, leading full-service investment bank and asset management firm serving clients in the US, suggests that the craze for iPhones and Apple Watch among teens is growing faster than before.

Piper Jaffray’s 33rd semi-annual “Taking Stock Teens” survey found that about 81 per cent of teens today expect their next phone to be an iPhone, up from 79 per cent the last survey period, and 13 per cent of them plan to purchase an Apple Watch within the next six months.

“81 per cent of teens expect their next phone to be an iPhone, which was up from 79 per cent in fall 2016 and, more importantly, the highest we have seen in the survey,” Piper Jaffray reported in its key takeaways in the analysis.

With 13 per cent of surveyed teens aiming to purchase the Apple Watch, up from 11 per cent last year, the Apple Watch remains as the second most popular smartwatch option among teenagers after Fitbit.

Overall, 71 per cent of the surveyed teens stated to prefer Fitbit as a fitness band, while 10 per cent said they prefer Apple Watch.

The survey report on “Teenager Stock Teens” was conducted among 5,500 teens in the US with an average age of 16 years.

In its analyses, Piper Jaffray, attributed the rising popularity of the much-awaited iPhone 8, which the Apple will release on its 10th anniversary this September.

The survey also found that overall teen spending moved down 2.4 per cent year-over-year, parent contribution to teen spend is at 63 per cent down from average 68 per cent.
