Hyderabad: Household staple aluminium foil can improve the signal strength of the Wi-Fi you have at home, says a new research.
There is a constant battle between the location in the house and the strength of the Wi-Fi signal, particularly in spacious homes. In apartment blocks where there are lots of wireless routers cramped in one building, the interference Wi-Fi signals face causes another kind of problem.
According to the new research, aluminium foil and cans can be used efficiently to enhance wireless signals at homes.
Wi-Fi routers emit a wireless signal in all directions with equal strength. Most households have one box that works as a modem and router whose location is based on where your phone or cable point is.
Consequently, the mobility of the router is limited. The closer the router is placed to an obstacle, the more restricted the signal will get. Therefore, the signal is weak in some corners of the house.
A simple semicircular aluminium foil can redirect the signal strength efficiently, such that certain areas of the rooms are blocked off and signal is strengthened in places where required. This involves placing an aluminium foil on and around the antennae of a Wi-Fi router.
However, some technology geeks use nano USB adaptors to get a better Wi-Fi reception. In such scenario, an adaptor has to be bought, the driver installed from bundled CD or internet.
Software engineer K. Kamal said, “The idea of aluminium foil is certainly interesting, but can only to boost signal strength and not help resolve connectivity issues.”
While aluminium foil cannot replace the nano USB adaptor completely, it certainly is a relief for users who need to only increase speed.
