Smart router
Three weeks ago we introduced a new category of smart routers that can be set up and controlled via smartphone. We had a chance to try out the latest and fastest product in this class. The quad-antenna Linksys WRT 1900 ACS is aimed at both home and small office and offers the most up-to-date specifications: It works with all Wi-Fi bands including the latest: 802.11 ac, which is theoretically 4 times as fast as the previous 'n' standard. It covers both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands which means it can deliver 600Mb/s to 1300Mb/s if your end device supports the speeds.
Usefully, the makers have provided the latest and fastest USB 3.0 ports as well as a USB 2.0 port which doubles as a port to which you can connect external SATA storage drives. This is in addition to 4 Ethernet gigabit ports. Like all smart routers, the WRT 1900 works with a phone app which makes initial set up easy, and lets you control the Wi-Fi network, regulate access and map the coverage. The router is priced at Rs 20,999, but we have seen it offered for less at Indian e-commerce sites.
