Microsoft-owned Skype is dropping off support from a host of older platforms on July 1, causing many smartphone users' no longer be able to access the app, reported TechCrunch.
The move to end support for a variety of platforms comes following the integration of a Snapchat-style feature into the app. According to the report, as a part to get more people to use the revamped version of the app, Skype is retiring a host of older iterations on July 1.
“Because we want everyone to experience the best Skype has to offer, it’s sometimes necessary to retire older versions of Skype, and Skype-enabled devices,” a Microsoft spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Unsupported Skype-enabled devices and platforms may experience problems with calls and chats, lost or dropped calls and instant messages, or could stop working completely.”
Below is the list of operating systems that will lose support for Skype:
- Android 4.0.2 and lower
- BlackBerry OS 7.1 and lower
- iOS 7 and lower
- Windows Phone 8.1 and lower
