OnePlus confirms Android P for OnePlus 6

OnePlus will be providing customers with an option of trying out the latest beta version of Android.

In a pretty unexpected move, Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has announced the availability of Google’s beta version of its upcoming release of Android for its yet-to-be-released flagship offering — the OnePlus 6. Users will be able to test the developer preview of Android P Beta on their OnePlus 6 handsets as soon as the device is made available for sale in the markets across the world.

OnePlus will make the latest Developer Preview of Android P available for use on the OnePlus 6. This will be beneficial for the developer community, who need a competent device with the latest version of Android to test out their apps and services. Developers will be able to use the OnePlus 6 for testing and adapting their apps for the new display notch cutout — a feature that Android P will support natively, which will eventually be adopted by the market as a standard feature.

However, do note that OnePlus is expected to ship the handset with a stable build of Android 8.1 Oreo-based Oxygen OS on top. The Developer Preview of Android P is likely to contain bugs and issues, which is why it’s advisable to go for the beta update only if you are ready to compromise the system stability.

This is the first time OnePlus has made an aggressive move to roll out the latest under-development version of Android for an ‘yet-to-be-released’ smartphone. The OnePlus 5T was launched with a Android 7.1-based Oxygen OS onboard, despite Android Oreo already out in the market for a while. OnePlus says that they are working closely with Google to release the latest version of Android to their consumers as soon as possible , which means we can expect a stable build of Android P to hit the OnePlus 6 sometime later in the year.
