Apple to use OLED displays in all iPhones launching next year: report

Only a premium iPhone model, set to be launched this year, is known to feature an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display; however reports suggest this won’t be the case second half of 2018 onwards. According to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, Apple is planning to use OLED screen panels in all iPhones launched from the second half of 2018.

OLED is considered better than the Liquid crystal display (LCD) any given day. The former provides a sharper colour contrast than what LCD offer. Also, it is bendable and thus gives more room to smartphone giants to play around a phone’s design.

Since the launch of first Samsung OLED-featured smartphone released in 2010, smartphone industry has seen a sudden preference for OLED panels. Many Chinese smartphone vendors have also started releasing OLED-based smartphones in recent years.

Among the scheduled models for this year’s release, the iPhone 8 is said to sport OLED screen, while the other two—iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus to come with LCD display. This would be the first time an Apple phone will be featuring OLED screen The display is being manufactured by Samsung Display unit, who currently leads the OLED display market. Samsung is bound to deliver about 70 million OLED panels to the Apple, but previous reports suggest it will only be able to supply 3-4 million units to Apple before the launch of iPhone 8, which means Apple consumers may find it difficult to get their hands on the premium model.
