Apple to axe Intel radio chips by 2020

A new report suggests that the Cupertino giant will ultimately ditch Intel radio chipsets by 2020.

Amidst the Apple and Qualcomm’s legal battle, there were reports stating Intel would be the next radio and modem chipmaker for the upcoming iPhones. As of now, this year’s and probably the year after's iPhones will most likely feature Intel’s chipsets, a new report claims that Apple has notified Intel that it will not use the chipmaker’s radio chips in 2020.

According to GSMArena, the report also suggests that the development of the chipset – combined with modem, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth by the company has been halted and the team working on it has also been dismantled. It also states that Apple was supposed to be the primary mobile customer of the Intel’s new component (chipset).

The report further claims the 5G chipsets for mobile devices will likely be introduced in 2019, however, the large-scale roll-out is expected to be rolled out globally by 2020. Apple is expected to launch this 5G-enabled iPhone in 2020 and also rumoured to support the new Wi-Fi standard – WiGig (802.11ad).
