Google recently announced two new smartphones – Pixel and Pixel XL at an event in San Francisco yesterday. Both the smartphones feature several updated specs that Google has implemented on its devices for the first time.
In fact, reports suggest Google even claimed that the Pixel phones are equipped with the best camera on a smartphone ever. Google engineers apparently spent a year working on the smartphone’s camera.
Moreover DxOMark, a trusted industry standard for camera and lens quality ratings even granted a score of 89 to Pixel’s camera – the highest ever in their listings.
Google’s Pixel camera even beat Apple’s iPhone 7 which received a score of 86. Other smartphones that Pixel seem to have left behind include Google Nexus 6P, Apple iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, Sony Xperia X Performance among others.
'The Pixel has very few weaknesses when it comes to image quality, but it does suffer from some inconsistency in repeated autofocus, and artifacts can appear in low-light shots. The Pixel racked up excellent results in our Video testing, consistent with other top-scoring smartphones,’ DxOMark’s website read.
Google’s Pixel smartphone features a 12.3MP rear camera along with f/2.0 lens. The device’s auto-focus consists of a combination of laser detection (LDAF) and phase detection (PDAF) which can record 4K video at 30fps.
Google has even implemented an enhanced version of its HDR+ multi-image capability with Pixel’s camera.
Calling it the best smartphone camera they have tested to date, DxOMark says, ‘The Pixel raises the bar for what is possible with a smartphone camera. Image quality continues to improve, and the increased use of HDR+ to render scenes that have previously been difficult for small sensors such as those in smartphones broadens what is possible with these ubiquitous devices. While we have reviewed other smartphone cameras that matched the Pixel’s numbers in a few categories, the Pixel is uniquely capable of capturing outstanding images under a wide variety of conditions, and is also among the best we have tested for video capture.’
