Curved display, Air gestures for iPhone: Is Apple following Samsung's footsteps?
Whenever you consider Apple, the first and foremost thing that comes to the mind is innovation. Apple is known to be the trendsetter for new technologies in the market. With last year’s iPhone X, they showed how a fullscreen display is done in style along with a modern biometric verification system. However, arch-rival Samsung has been introducing those newer technologies before Apple, though in a slightly uncooked state — whether it is the bezel-less display or iris scanner-based security verification. And now, it seems that Apple has taken two uncooked features from Samsung’s catalogue and aimed to present it in a presentable way.
Industry insiders close to Bloomberg suggest that Apple is presently working on the curved displays for iPhones. However, unlike Samsung’s curved edge displays on their flagship smartphones, Apple will pull the curves on the top and bottom. The curved display is said to “curve inwards gradually from top to bottom.” While the use of such a scenario hasn’t been explained anywhere, it’s expected that Apple could be doing something to make a more immersive viewing experience for one of its iPhones in the future.
Apart from the curved display, Apple is also exploring touch-less gestures for navigation. The report mentions that the technology will require the user to perform the gesture at a close distance to the display as the motion tracking system will be housed in the display panel. This is pretty different from Samsung’s Air Gesture feature that debuted on the Galaxy S4 a few years ago, where Samsung embedded a motion sensor to detect gestures from a particular distance. Samsung’s Air Gesture showed useful information while the user hovered his finger over an icon or button.
Both of these technologies are still under works and there’s a high chance that Apple could ditch these in favour of something else. Even if these get the green light, we can only expect iPhones from 2-3 years in the future to feature these. In the present, Apple is expected to bring some of the iPhone X’s features to slightly affordable iPhone models this year. Rumours suggest the narrow-bezel display and FaceID making it to all the new iPhones this year as standard fitment.
