Optimised Skype for lower-end Android phones

The update seems to be lighter version of the app and can allow lower consumption of both memory and data on lower-end Android devices.

Microsoft has announced a new update to its existing Skype app for Android, which is supposed to be an optimised version for lower-end Android smartphones. This new update will be optimised for the devices running older Android versions that include Android 4.0.3 - 5.1 globally.

This update would most likely to be rolled out in the coming days, and will be lighter on memory consumption including data. It can also manage the app’s reasonable functioning based on the respective cellular connections. This lower consumption of data and memory will apparently allow the app to increase its speed along with better audio and video services. Microsoft aims people to connect “wherever, whenever, and from whatever device possible.”

However, this update program from the company seems to be similar to what other tech giants like Google and Facebook are approaching for its ‘lite’ versions of their popular apps. Google has a whole set of its pre-installed apps under Android Go program, for those who prefer to use lesser data and lower-memory phones. Accordingly, Facebook had also been with this same approach for its Facebook app (Facebook Lite) along with its messenger app (Messenger Lite).

These lite version apps usually clear the cutter in the feeds and content seem to load faster than usual due to lesser use of memory. Twitter had also recently launched its lite mobile version for Android that is also optimised for lower-end smartphones.

Lastly, the optimised Skype app update is soon to be rolled out for Android smartphones. For those who are interested in trying out it early before the official release can opt for Microsoft Skype Insider program, where the company tends to fix changes/bugs based on the feedback given by the testers.
