Android One gets a new member from Sharp

The latest addition to the fledgling Android One line-up gets Google Pixel-inspired design and powerful specifications.

Google’s Android One project was meant to provide pure Android experiences to the people who couldn’t afford a Nexus device. However, it could never carry on the company’s expectations, especially in a market filled with better packages than the Android One products. Therefore, only a small number of devices keep refreshing their line-up time-to-time. Sharp has done that exactly by launching the X1, an updated Android One device running on the latest Android in Japan.

The X1 is powered by Android Nougat 7.1.1, which is currently the latest stable version of Android globally. On the hardware front, the Sharp X1 has 5.3-inch Full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset along with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It has a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera for selfies.

However, a major highlighted feature of the X1 is its water and dust resistance, which is a rarity in the Android One portfolio. It also has a fingerprint scanner and a 3900mAh battery. For the Japanese market, Sharp has also given the X1 support for FeliCa, an NFC-based payment system that derives its roots from Android Pay.

This Google Pixel-inspired smartphone is available in Japan for JPY 70,524 (Rs 40,000).
