LG confirms OLED panel on its 'next flagship' smartphone

OLED screens are thinner, flexible, consume less power and offers better picture quality.

LG is finally jumping on the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) bandwagon following the footsteps of rival smartphone brands Apple and Samsung, the company confirmed in a press note. The electronic giant has announced to bring the much-anticipated OLED display to its “next flagship device”, widely reported to be the V30.

“The next flagship smartphone from LG Electronics (LG) will be the first ever device to feature a plastic OLED FullVision display,” LG wrote in a press note on its website.

In comparison to the mainstay liquid crystal display (LCDs), OLED screens are thinner, flexible, consume less power and offers better picture quality.

“Expertise in OLED has long been a core competency of LG, and the technology has always been seen as a potential value-add for smartphones,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With competition in the global smartphone space fiercer now than ever, we felt that this was the right time to reintroduce OLED displays in our mobile products.”

The OLED display will be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that incorporates shatter-resistant technology, LG added.

The firm had already outlined its plans to enhance OLED display production dedicated for upcoming flagships. It announced to invest about an additional $7 billion in company’s plant to boost output of OLED panels for smartphones, than just restricting itself to producing large-size OLED display for televisions, which is LG’s monopoly in OLED display market.
