Xiaomi's Redmi Note 5 under works, might release in Q2 2018: Report

A report from China says that Xiaomi is waiting for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 632 SoC to complete the Redmi Note 5.

When Xiaomi announced the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus in China last month, the hopes were high for the company to also announce the Redmi Note 5 — a highly anticipated successor to the successful Redmi Note 4. However, the Internet was awash with reports saying there would be no Redmi Note 5 this year and Xiaomi would, in fact, use the Redmi lineup to cater to the midrange smartphone market. Now, it turns out Xiaomi’s ‘Note-series fans’ could finally get to see a new version of the popular midrange smartphone pretty soon.

If we are to believe a report from MyDrivers, then Xiaomi will is currently working on the Redmi Note 5 and is planning to release it sometime in the second quarter of 2018. The report mentions that Xiaomi is waiting for Qualcomm to announce the Snapdragon 632 chipset, which is expected to be a toned-down yet power efficient version of the Snapdragon 636 chipset. The 632 will be possible underclocked to 1.8GHz but will retain the 636’s dual-camera ISP. It is also expected that the Redmi Note 5 will be priced a bit higher than what the Redmi Note 4 was announced for, with prices expected to start around Rs 15,000 for the base variant. Therefore, it is expected that the new model will come out in the second quarter of 2018.

If all of these rumours prove to be true, then the Redmi Note 5 should have an impressive specification list for a 2018 midrange smartphone — a big 18:9 display (possibly 5.9-inches), a rear dual camera setup similar to the Mi A1, 3GB/4GB of RAM, the Snapdragon 632 SoC and a similar, if not bigger, battery than the Note 4.
