Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is currently working on a Bluetooth messaging app called Bitchat.
The Block CEO, in a post on X, wrote: “My weekend project to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store-and-forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things. Bitchat: Bluetooth mesh chat… IRC vibes.”
Bitchat operates through Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing users to send messages without the need for Wi-Fi or a cellular network. While Bluetooth messaging apps typically work within a range of around 100 meters, Dorsey claimed that this app offers an extended range of up to 300 meters.
Bitchat is said to be end-to-end encrypted, similar to one of the most popular messaging apps, Bridgefy, which was used during the protests in Hong Kong due to its ability to function without internet access.
The app was opened to beta testers through Apple’s TestFlight, and the test is reportedly reaching its 10,000-user limit, according to TechCrunch.
Dorsey stated that the “app is still in review for full release.”
